What is psycholinguistics?

Psycholinguistics deals with the question, how people process the language in their head, that is how people comprehend, produce, and acquire a language. We use our mother tongue in our everyday life without any worries or struggles. However, this process is very time consuming and requires a lot of efforts. We only realize that when the fully automated language processing suffers from a disorder, for instance in aphasia or when we want to acquire a new language. Even a child´s language acquisition takes years of intense practice, and its mastery is not concluded until around the 13th age. In psycholinguistics, the research areas of language processing, language acquisition, and language pathology are studied with the implementation of experimental methods. In our laboratory, we mainly utilize eye-tracking, EEG, and reaction time measurements.
