The team of Empirical and Experimental Linguistics of German - Psycholinguistics
The team of Empirical and Experimental Linguistics of German, led by Professor Dr. Mertins researches numerous aspects of psycholinguistics. The focus of the team is primarily on the fields of language and cognition, spatial cognition, speech pathology, language acquisition, bilingualism, and intellectual giftedness. The ongoing research is on the impact of expertise on spatial perception, the role of language in comprehending mathematical tasks, investigating the intellectual giftedness in language, and studies on language production and aphasia in Alzheimer's dementia. With these objectives, the team in the psycholinguistics laboratories has a highly modern eye-tracking and EEG technology at its disposal, which provides the researchers with information about the visual attention and cognitive mechanisms of the participants and thus reveals their reading and solution strategies. Mertins’ team also utilizes these methods in the interdisciplinary research project of “Space, Language and Cognition”, in which the perception of architectural space is specifically examined. This has created a unique interface between psycholinguistics and architecture as well as the associated department at TU Dortmund University. Mertins’ internationally diverse team is made up of doctoral students, scientific assistants, and student and research assistants. Many of them are bilingual themselves, come from a wide variety of disciplines, and therefore have equally diverse interdisciplinary interests.
The Mertins’ team is led with a strong focus on promoting youth development and women development. In addition, the management is in favor of the close links between education and research and encourages students to participate in and contribute to the research.
