The Institute Introduces Itself

The Institute for Diversity Studies. Cognition ∩ Literature ∩ Media ∩ Language researches diversity from a linguistic, literary, and media studies perspective. The mathematical sign for intersection ∩ emphasizes the interdisciplinary research approach and at the same time points to the intersection of different aspects of identity, such as age, gender, first and second language, and ethnic and social origin. These aspects can be linked to competencies and potentials, but also to forms of disadvantage and discrimination. Based on recent concepts of interdisciplinary Gender and Diversity Studies, we at the Institute look especially at interfaces of linguistic, cultural and social diversity. The Institute for Diversity Studies at TU Dortmund University emerged in December 2020 from a working group that had existed since the summer semester of 2018.

In the teacher training programs German and English, we are dedicated to inclusive and diversity-sensitive teaching of subject-specific content in all types of schools. Our attention focuses on social inequalities and cultural differences as well as the positive side of diversity. We attach great importance to interdisciplinary research in an international context, which we closely link to our teaching program. In this way, we integrate innovative as well as proven formats of academic teaching into German-language Diversity Studies in order to also contribute linguistic and cultural studies approaches to the overall societal transformation processes towards diversity, diversity and inclusion.

The Institute for Diversity Studies is located on the North Campus of TU Dortmund University. The majority of faculty offices and most seminar rooms are located in the building at Emil-Figge-Straße 50, while the Psycholinguistics Eyetracking Laboratory operates on the 2nd floor at Martin-Schmeißer-Weg 13.
